"Fifteen months before the midterm congressional election, health care is appearing in candidate stump speeches and interviews - particularly by Republican challengerṣ€¦ running in districts recently claimed by Democrats," USA Today reports. "That dynamic helps explain why a $1 trillion-plus health care bill stalled last week in Congress. ̣€¦ Obama has said he wants lawmakers to finish health care by the end of the year, in part because it could become mired in election-year politics. All 435 members of the House and 36 members of the Senate are up for election in 2010."

Human Genome Sciences Announces Completion Of Enrollment In Phase 2b Monthly-Dosing Trial Of Albuferon(R)
Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: HGSI) announced that Novartis has completed enrollment and initial dosing in a Phase 2b clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Albuferon(R) (albinterferon alfa-2b) administered monthly in combination with ribavirin in treatment-naive patients with genotypes 2 and 3 chronic hepatitis C. Albuferon is being developed by HGS and Novartis under an exclusive worldwide co-development and commercialization agreement entered into in June 2006.

FDA Approves Hologic's Less Invasive Permanent Contraception System

FDA has given final approval to Hologic"s Adiana permanent contraception system, the Boston Herald reports. The company hopes to market the procedure as an alternative to tubal ligation surgery for the roughly 700,000 U.S. women who undergo the procedure each year. Adiana is similar to Conceptus" Essure, which has been on the market since 2002.Adiana involves a two-step procedure that can be performed in about 15 minutes in a doctor"s office. The process consists of inserting a catheter into the fallopian tubes and delivering a low level of radio frequency energy to make a small lesion on the inside lining of each tube. The catheter then implants silicone polymer inserts, about the size of a grain of rice, on top of the lesions.
