New Guideline For Low-Back Pain Interventions, Surgery Issued By The American Pain Society
The American Pain Society (APS) has issued a new clinical practice guideline for low back pain that emphasizes the use of noninvasive treatments over interventional procedures, as well as shared decision making between provider and patient. The findings are published in the current (May 1, 2009) issue of the journal Spine.

Promising New Drug Combination For Patients With Sleeping Sickness
Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness affects tens of thousands of people every year in sub-Saharan Africa. It is a fatal disease with few treatment options. According to an article in this week"s issue of The Lancet, Nifurtimox in combination with eflornithine is safe, effective, and more affordable than current treatments for sleeping sickness. This new drug combination should be implemented as a matter of priority by control programmes across sub-Saharan Africa.

Anxiety And Depression Lower Quality Of Life In Majority Of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients
92.8% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) suffer anxiety and depression which significantly affects both their physical and emotional quality of life (QoL), according to the results of a new study presented today at EULAR 2009, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Copenhagen, Denmark. Logistic regression analysis revealed that depression was the most significant factor shown to affect QoL (p=0.015; OR=0.18; CI 95%:0.045-0.72).

Dynavax Awarded Grant To Support Development Of TLR Inhibitors In Skin Diseases

Dynavax Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq:DVAX) announced the award of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). This grant will support the preclinical development of Dynavax"s first-in-class oligonucleotide-based Toll-like Receptor (TLR) inhibitors for use in inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis, cutaneous lupus, and dermatomyositis. This new two-year $700,000 grant is in addition to a $1.8 million grant awarded in 2008. "In addition to validating our proprietary technology, this new grant supports the preclinical studies for our TLR inhibitors, which represent a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of inflammatory skin disorders," commented Robert L.
