China"s $124 billion three-year "overhaul of its healthcare system needs to address the prescription of unnecessary drugs and treatments - a widespread practice relied upon to finance the medical sector, the World Bank said Thursday," China Daily/People"s Daily Online reports. The country"s "ambitious" reform efforts aim to "provide basic medical coverage and insurance to the country"s 1.3 billion people," according to the publication (7/24).

According to a new report by HHS" Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, there is insufficient evidence to conclude that genetic testing for two gene mutations in adults with a history of blood clots helps to prevent a condition known as deep-vein thrombosis or to improve other clinical outcomes.

Radiant Research, Inc. Prepares For Upcoming H1N1 Vaccine Trials
Radiant Research, Inc. announced that it is actively recruiting subjects and establishing operational plans for upcoming H1N1 vaccine trials. The World Health Organization declared the H1N1 influenza outbreak a pandemic, and the CDC has shipped virus samples to several manufacturers with the hope of having vaccine available to the general public by the fall. Manufacturers will need to complete clinical trials prior to release of vaccine to the public.

California Group To Boost HIV Prevention Measures In Adult Film Industry

The California-based clinic Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation (AIMHF), which serves the adult film industry, said on Monday it will boost its HIV prevention measures by urging the industry to use an online database to verify that employees have recently been tested for HIV, the Los Angeles Times reports. The industry currently requires that workers be tested every 30 days. Los Angeles County health officials recently reported that there had been 16 unpublicized cases of HIV in adult film workers in the county since 2004 after news emerged last week that an adult film actress tested positive for HIV (Yoshino, Los Angels Times, 6/15).
